This page captures memories that are very special to me and many others who grew up in Temple City and played Temple City Pop Warner Football in the 1960s and early 70s at Live Oak Park.

Playing Pop Warner football in the 1960s was a thrilling and formative experience for us as young boys, filled with camaraderie, competition, and a deep sense of community. Pop Warner football provided an avenue for kids to learn the game, build character, and forge lifelong friendships on the gridiron.

One of the defining aspects of Pop Warner football in the 1960s was the grassroots nature of the sport. Our practices were held at Live Oak Park and Rosemead Park. We were taught the fundamentals and eagerly donning our pads and helmets for the 2-hour practices in anticipation of the upcoming game. Traveling to away games meant piling into station wagons or carpooling with teammates.

Participating in Pop Warner football meant more than just learning the X’s and O’s of the game; it was about instilling values such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Our coaches emphasized the importance of hard work, sportsmanship, and respect for opponents, teaching young players lessons that would serve them well both on and off the field.

The games themselves were a mix of excitement and adrenaline. Whether under the blazing sun or chilly autumn skies, players eagerly lined up on the sidelines, awaiting their turn to take the field. Crowds of parents, siblings, and fans cheered from the bleachers, providing an electrifying atmosphere that fueled the players’ passion for the game.

More than just a sport, Pop Warner football in the 1960s was a cherished tradition that brought our community together and left a lasting impact on the lives of those who participated. Whether scoring a touchdown, making a tackle, or simply being part of a team, the memories forged on the football field would endure for a lifetime.
